How to Send an Edgar’s Cake Anywhere in the U.S.

If you’re sending to someone who grew up in Alabama, send the strawberry cake. It’s the one we’ve been known for since 1998 and it’s the one they’ll recognize.

How it arrives

Cakes and cheesecakes ship frozen, packed with dry ice in an insulated box. They arrive cold and solid, which is the whole point — that’s what protects the cake in transit.

Breads, rolls, pies, bundt cakes, and pound cakes ship without dry ice and are ready to eat when the box opens.

We ship Monday through Thursday, and orders arrive Tuesday through Friday. No weekend deliveries — cake doesn’t need to sit in a truck over a Saturday.

Tell them what to do with it

This is where gifts go wrong: nobody tells the recipient what’s in the box or what to do with it. So do.

For a frozen cake, the message is simple: move it to the refrigerator and let it thaw before serving. Give it several hours, or overnight if you can. Don’t rush it on a counter and don’t microwave it.

Once it’s thawed, the same rule applies as in our stores: cream cheese icings need to stay refrigerated. Our strawberry cake has strawberry cream cheese icing, so it lives in the fridge. Buttercream and fondant cakes are comfortable at room temperature.

And handle the dry ice with a towel or gloves, not bare hands. It will sublimate on its own — just leave the box open in a ventilated spot.

Who this is actually for

College students. This is the single best use of a shipped cake. A birthday in a dorm two states away is a real problem and this solves it completely.

Alabama people who moved away. There is a whole diaspora of people who describe a specific strawberry cake to their friends and get politely nodded at. Settle the argument.

Corporate gifts and client thank-yous. A cake is more memorable than a gift card and considerably more memorable than a branded water bottle. Gift boxes work well when you’re sending to an office.

Sympathy and new babies. When you can’t be there, food is the oldest and best way to say so.

Long-distance birthdays. Schedule it to arrive on the day.

Here’s the thing about shipped cake that catches people every year: once a ship date is full, it’s full. There’s no talking your way onto it. And holiday specialties like the Christmas Wreath Cake and the Tom Turkey Cake sell out.

If you know you’re sending something for Thanksgiving or Christmas, put the order in early. September and October are not too soon. The people who are disappointed in late November are the ones who waited until late November.

A rough working calendar:

• Thanksgiving gifts — order by early November; the week of Thanksgiving itself is the tightest week of the fall
• Christmas gifts — order by early December, earlier for holiday specialty cakes
• Corporate gifting — get your list together in October, when there’s still room to ship in batches
