Game Day at Edgar’s: What to Bring, What to Order, and When

Every Saturday this month, somebody in Alabama is hosting. Maybe it’s a tailgate off McFarland Boulevard. Maybe it’s twelve people in a den in Trussville with the sound turned all the way up. Either way, somebody has to bring the food — and somebody usually forgets the dessert until Friday night.

Here’s how to not be that person.

Look at the September calendar first

There’s a home game in an Edgar’s town almost every weekend this month:

• Saturday, September 5 — Alabama hosts East Carolina in Tuscaloosa
• Saturday, September 12 — UAB hosts Louisiana–Monroe at Protective Stadium; Auburn hosts Southern Miss
• Saturday, September 19 — Alabama hosts Florida State in Tuscaloosa; Auburn hosts Florida
• Friday, September 25 — UAB hosts Navy at Protective Stadium
• Saturday, September 26 — Alabama hosts South Carolina; Auburn hosts Vanderbilt

Two things to know before you plan around those dates.

First, we prefer about 48 hours’ notice on cake orders. For a Saturday game, that means calling or ordering online by Thursday.

Second, we’re closed Labor Day, Monday, September 7. If you’re hosting over that first game weekend, order by Friday, September 4 and pick up Friday or Saturday morning.

The four things that actually travel well

A tailgate is a hot parking lot and a folding table. Not everything survives that. These do:

Cookie cakes. Our cookie cakes run $27–$40 and are the single easiest game-day dessert there is — one flat round, no slicing tools, no plates required if you’re being honest about it. Ask for it iced in your team’s colors. Crimson and white, orange and blue, green and gold — our decorators do color requests all the time.

Cheese straws. A two-dozen bag runs $9.50 and this is the most Southern thing on our menu for a reason. They don’t melt, they don’t need refrigeration, and they disappear.

Our Snacktime Assortment Tray. Eighty-five pieces, serves about 30, $65. If you want one thing that covers a whole crowd’s sweet tooth without you making eleven decisions, this is it.

The Cookie Jar. Two dozen assorted cookies for $45. Chocolate chip, chocolate chip M&M, chocolate chip pecan. Nobody has ever complained.

Also worth knowing: our Sports decorated cake design is already on the menu if you’d rather bring a proper cake than a cookie.

Feeding a real crowd? Do the math first

For anything over about fifteen people, guessing costs you money in both directions. Our serving counts:

A useful rule for game day specifically: size dessert for about 75% of your headcount. People graze at a tailgate, they don’t sit down to a slice.

If you’re hosting a watch party indoors

Then you’ve got refrigeration, and that opens up the good stuff. Our strawberry cake — the one people drive across town for — has strawberry cream cheese icing and needs to stay cold. Same with lemon. If your setup is a cooler in a parking lot, go buttercream or fondant instead: caramel, double chocolate, Italian crème, or a cookie cake all hold up at room temperature just fine.

And if the party’s bigger than your house, our Homewood event room rents for $75 an hour with a two-hour minimum and a $50 food minimum. There’s a TV. Party rooms are also available at Pelham, Huntsville South, and Madison.

Where to pick up

We’ve got 11 locations across central and north Alabama, including the Galleria of Tuscaloosa if you’re headed toward Bryant–Denny, and three in Birmingham proper — Financial Center downtown, The Colonnade, and Homewood — if you’re staying in town for a UAB game. Our Madison location is right at the ballpark on Stadium Way.
