Edgar's bakery was founded in 1998 in the Inverness area of Birmingham , Alabama by Terry and Dottie Smith. If you were to ask how Edgar's began, you might expect to hear of great ambitions, and strategies. Instead, Terry Smith will tell you that he started his bakery simply because he was asked to leave the security of an established career with a reputable company to step out in blind obedience to God.

"If you are asking if I had some great vision of this huge bakery...I would have to say no. All that I knew was that God was calling me to move into my own business and I obeyed. I didn't have big plans but, obviously ,God did."

Terry, with the encouragement and support of his wife Dottie, followed his heart and was met by a series of unlikely events confirming his decision to open his own bakery. (His employees hope one day to persuade him to share those miraculous times in book form!)

With the decision made, the Smiths sought a location which would offer convenience in an upscale, easily accessible locale and the Shops of the Colonnade were chosen. The bakery's cozy, intimate atmosphere was an instant hit with its coffee, fresh pastries and deli lunches.

As business increased, the Smiths decided that it was time for Dottie to leave the corporate world as a Senior Vice President to return to her passion for creating beautiful desserts and cakes on a full time basis. Together they established what is now repeatedly named Birmingham's best bakery.

From a single location, Edgar's reputation for delicious cakes quickly spread across the Birmingham area. With the increased customer demand came the need for more space to maintain high quality standards.

In 2002, the Smiths made a commitment to invest in a state of the art production facility to accommodate a twenty-four hour a day baking schedule. Groundbreaking at the Pelham production facility was met with such local enthusiasm that blueprints were changed to also incorporate an area for another retail shop. This shop's interior is frequently complimented by customers as reminiscent of their favorite European cafes. The spacious dining patio has made it a local lunchtime favorite.

In 2004, Terry and Dottie again responded to customer demand by opening the third retail location at Patton Creek in Hoover . With a gift area and dining room that open to a view of the tree lined street below, its New Orleans style balcony is a welcome respite for shoppers and a romantic setting for an evening out.

With four locations and frequent customer requests for more, we view our growth as validation of our foundational commitment to high quality and genuine service. Dottie stated that, "We will never expand for expansion sake, but we will always keep an open ear to meeting our customer's needs."

The website you enjoy today is another step in that commitment. This is our attempt to make it more convenient for our customers who drive across the Southeast to bring Edgar's products home for their special occasions. We cherish your friendships and hope that our effort to bridge the distance will be a blessing.
